The
Orokonui Ecosanctuary - bringing
home Otago's exiled wildlife and helping to save New Zealand's
threatened species for all
to appreciate.
Located just 20 km north of Dunedin City, the Orokonui Ecosanctuary
comprises over 300 hectares of land, where the Otago Natural History
Trust
is restoring a New Zealand forest ecosystem in which native flora
and fauna
will thrive. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Trust, its
members
and sponsors, the site is now completely surrounded by nearly 10
km of
highly specialised exclusion fence designed to keep out all pest
mammals.

The ecosanctuary is for all to experience and
enjoy, and fundraising is underway for the construction of the visitor
facilities, including an information centre and tracks. Funds are
also needed for the costs of ecological restoration, which includes
the return of rare native species such as kaka, kakariki, tuatara
and saddleback.
Orokonui will become a special place of excitement, wonder and learning,
reaching back into New Zealand's biological past to embrace new opportunities
for tourism, education, recreation and research in Dunedin.
