230 hectares of Department of Conservation (DOC) land within the Ecosanctuary are gazetted as nature reserve. The Otago Natural History Trust has been appointed by the Minister of Conservation to control and manage the nature reserve. The Ecosanctuary has close research, management and and advocacy relationships with Otago Conservancy.

Mana whenua is exercised over the Orokonui area by Kati Hiurapa Runaka ki Puketeraki, who have gifted the name Te Korowai o Mihiwaka to the Ecosanctuary. This honours the work being done here on the slopes of Mihiwaka in restoring the living forest cloak of Tāne (the ancient god of the forest) to protect his children - the birds, lizards and insects.
The ONHT has undertaken to ensure that Te Reo, kawa and tikanga of Puketeraki marae and its hapu are an inherent part of the Ecosanctuary and its operations.
