Join our experienced guides on a 2 hour tour of the Ecosanctuary at Sunset (approx. 1hour before/1hour after dusk)
Six young Kiwi roam an Otago hillside within the Ecosanctuary for the first time in 130 years. Orokonui After Dark allows visitors to experience the nocturnal realm of the Kiwi and encounter all the other creatures of the forest at night, when many of the ‘stars’ of this Cloud Forest come out to play. It is an immersion of the senses beyond the cloak of dusk, an entrée into a mystical evening under a Southern Hemisphere night sky. Hear the calls and sounds of New Zealand’s night birds including Ruru – Morepork, the Native Owl as well as our young Kiwi begin calling.
It all starts with a stroll in the fading light whilst being serenaded by an evening chorus of Ecosanctuary day birds signaling sunset to see Kaka (NZ parrot) socialising and possibly feeding at dusk. Later once the sun retires if you tread softly, are very quiet ... and you are very lucky, you might just hear or see sign of a rare Haast Tokoeka Kiwi to escort you home to your bed, your slumber ... and your dreams.
