In 2000 the concept of the Orokonui Ecosanctuary was launched by the Otago Natural History Trust (ONHT) under the leadership of Dr Ralph Allen. 

  • The Board of Trustees comprises:
  • Neville Peat - Chair; naturalist and author
  • Stewart Harvey - Secretary/Treasurer; retired accountant
  • Barbara Moerhuis - trustee; teacher with Kati Huirapa affiliations
  • Kelvin Lloyd - trustee; ecological consultant
  • Alyth Grant - trustee and volunteer
  • Graeme Leith - trustee and volunteer
  • David Mules - advisor; Area Manager, Coastal Otago Area, Department of Conservation
  • Robin Thomas - advisor; Area Manager, Coastal Otago Area, Department of Conservation.  Appointed by the Conservator, Otago Conservancy, Department of Conservation.

The Trust established a Orokonui Ecosanctuary Ltd. in 2007 to manage Orokonui Ecosanctuary as a financially viable enterprise.
