In 2000 the concept of the Orokonui Ecosanctuary was launched by the Otago Natural History Trust (ONHT) under the leadership of Dr Ralph Allen. 

  • The Board of Trustees comprises:
  • Neville Peat - Chair (Naturalist and Author)
  • Stewart Harvey - Secretary/Treasurer (Retired Accountant)
  • Barbara Moerhuis - Trustee (Teacher with Kati Huirapa affiliations)
  • Kelvin Lloyd - Trustee (Ecological Consultant)
  • Alyth Grant - Trustee (and Volunteer)
  • Graeme Leith - Trustee (and Volunteer)
  • David Mules - Advisor (Area Manager, Coastal Otago Area, Department of Conservation)
  • Robin Thomas - Advisor (Area Manager, Coastal Otago Area, Department of Conservation.  Appointed by the Conservator, Otago Conservancy, Department of Conservation.

The Trust established a Orokonui Ecosanctuary Ltd. in 2007 to manage Orokonui Ecosanctuary as a financially viable enterprise.
