In 2000 the concept of the Orokonui Ecosanctuary was launched by the Otago Natural History Trust (ONHT) under the leadership of Dr Ralph Allen.
- The Board of Trustees comprises:

- Stewart Harvey - Secretary/Treasurer (Retired Accountant)
- Barbara Moerhuis - Trustee (Teacher with Kati Huirapa affiliations)
- Kelvin Lloyd - Trustee (Ecological Consultant)
- Alyth Grant - Trustee (and Volunteer)
- Graeme Leith - Trustee (and Volunteer)
- David Mules - Advisor (Area Manager, Coastal Otago Area, Department of Conservation)
- Robin Thomas - Advisor (Area Manager, Coastal Otago Area, Department of Conservation. Appointed by the Conservator, Otago Conservancy, Department of Conservation.
The Trust established a Orokonui Ecosanctuary Ltd. in 2007 to manage Orokonui Ecosanctuary as a financially viable enterprise.
