About

The Otago Natural History Trust developed the concept of this Ecosanctuary several years ago. The project is well underway so the Trust has established a charitable status company called Orokonui Ecosanctuary Ltd with the Trust as the sole shareholder enabling it to operate as a self-funding enterprise.


Chris Baille,
General Manager
Chris Baillie was appointed as Orokonui Ecosanctuary's General Manager in 2007. Chris is responsible for the Ecosanctuary's financial management, fundraising, staff, the re-introduction of threatened species, the construction of the Visitor and Education Centre, marketing, media, education and volunteer recruitment. Chris has a BSc in Zoology and has 25 years experience in environmental project management for community based organizations in New Zealand and Australia.
 


Elton & Kelly

Elton Smith, Operations Manager
As Orokonui Ecosanctuary’s Operations Manager since 2006, Elton is responsible for fence monitoring and maintenance, pest eradication and monitoring, weed management, track construction, workplace safety and supervision of on site volunteers. Elton has a BSc in Zoology and Ecology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Wildlife Management as well as certificates in Arboriculture and Marine Tourism. Elton is well qualified for his role in the Ecosanctuary with previous experience in predator control for the Department of Conservation’s Grand and Otago Skink Recovery Programme, as Biodiversity Ranger for DOC in Te Anau and in a host of field work and guiding positions in the South Island.
   
Kelly Gough
Kelly comes from a farming background and participated in the Conservation Corps programme with DOC before undertaking a Taskforce Green placement at the Orokonui Ecosanctuary. Kelly is now employed by the Ecosanctuary and assists the Operations Manager with all on-site tasks.
